Kelly Hawke Baxter
Kelly Hawke Baxter was the founding Executive Director of The Natural Step Canada from 2005 until 2011.
Kelly was also a founding Board Member of The Natural Step Canada, former Chair of the Board, and is currently Vice-Chair of The Natural Step International. Her vision and passion for sustainability guided the Canadian organization through tremendous change and growth from a start up to an established non-profit organization.
The Natural Step has become a leading source of expertise and thought leadership in the field of transformational change towards sustainability. Kelly led a team in Canada that has trained 25,000 sustainability practitioners and worked with 250 organizations, supporting hundreds of senior executives and community leaders to become sustainability role models and ambassadors at large. Their work has led to sustainability awards, green building codes, sustainability filters for capital investments, sustainable purchasing practices, sustainable product design, zero-waste policies, carbon neutral strategies, and thousands of other concrete steps toward sustainability—large and small—from coast to coast.
Kelly brings two decades of experience in sustainable development to The Natural Step Canada. A journalist and editor by training, Kelly’s excellent communications skills make her an engaging speaker, facilitator, and leader. Kelly has a long history of supporting non-profit organizations in the sustainable development field and has volunteered with Friends of the Earth, the Developing Countries Farm Radio Network, and Street Kids International, among others.
Kelly holds masters degrees in Development Studies and International Journalism. She is a member of the International Centre for Sustainable Cities, the Green Living Advisory Board, and the Distinguished Advisory Council of the Norman Patterson School of International Affairs. She lives in Montreal with her husband and two sons.
